In Summary

The government is set to increase funding for the development and management of sports facilities.

The government is set to increase funding for the development and management of sports facilities by Sh671 million in the next financial year, reflecting its growing commitment to strengthening the sports sector.

According to the 2025/2026 budget estimates, the State Department for Sport will receive Sh17.8 billion for sports infrastructure, up from Sh17.1 billion in the current financial year.

This additional funding will go towards preparing for major international events and enhancing local sports facilities.

A further Sh102 million will be added to the budget for sports training and competitions, raising the total allocation to Sh516.4 million.

The department’s general administration, planning and support services will also see a modest rise of Sh8 million.

The projected increase in expenditure is tied to Kenya’s plan to host eight major international events and support 40 national teams competing abroad.

The country is preparing to stage high-profile competitions, including the World Rally Championship Safari Rally, Sirikwa Classic World Cross Country Tour, 2026 World Athletics Junior Championship, Para Volley Africa Zonal Championship, Magical Kenya Golf Championship, Kip Keino Classic World Continental Tour, Rugby Safari 7s, and the Nairobi City Marathon.

Kenya will also send delegations to key global competitions such as the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations qualifiers, and the 2025 Summer Deaflympics in Tokyo.

The budget for sports training and competitions will also support the training of 2,700 athletes and 1,500 technical and administrative personnel through the Kenya Academy of Sports.

The agency plans to carry out three research projects on talent development and create learning materials across five sporting disciplines.

The Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya will use part of the funds to conduct 1,300 tests and carry out awareness campaigns reaching 18,000 people.

Meanwhile, the Sports Registrar targets the registration of 350 new sports organizations, licensing of 30 professional athletes, inspection of 45 federations, and digitisation of registration processes.

Key facility projects to be funded include the completion of Talanta Sports City and upgrades to Moi International Sports Centre, Nyayo National Stadium, and Kipchoge Keino Stadium.

These facilities are part of Kenya’s preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

The Kenya Academy of Sports will also complete the first phase of its new complex and launch the construction of 40 Constituency Sports Academies nationwide.

The department's overall allocation will rise to Sh208,454,221 from Sh200,863,695.

While the sports training and competitions budget is expected to decline slightly in subsequent years, funding for facilities will continue to grow, with allocations of Sh18.9 billion and Sh20 billion projected for the 2026/2027 and 2027/2028 financial years, respectively.
